Losing a loved one is one of the most stressful life events. Loss is understood as a natural part of life, but life situations lead to the inability to mentally prepare for the loss of a loved one, which results in grieving and the potential onset of depression. People deal with grief differently and grieve differently. Grief decreases in intensity over time, but grieving is an important process for overcoming all the feelings that arise after the loss of a loved one. However, there are levels of grieving that most people experience such as: denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The sudden loss of a loved one can have a specific effect on how the bereaved will deal with the loss because they were simply not prepared for the loss in any way. Prolonged grief is characterized by increased and sustained mental stress after a loss. This type of grief is associated with a higher risk of suicidal ideation and behavior, even when controlling for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. There are also positive aspects of grieving, the so-called post-traumatic growth in which the bereaved find a new meaning in life and pay more attention to their current and future relationships and express their feelings more clearly. Every loss is difficult and every individual experiences death in a different way. Grieving over the loss of a loved one is a natural process that sometimes lasts for many years and can result in negative outcomes, but also positive ones such as a change in outlook on life and a change in behavior towards loved ones.
